Module: WLD1080 Angling
and Fisheries Management
Materials: Students will need
access to cold weather gear for hard water angling. Students will also have the
opportunity to participate in open water angling and will need appropriate
clothing. Equipment can be acquired through personal access, and/or making it
during class.
Assignments:
“Game
Fish Comparison” Assignment - Make a chart of 6 species of game fish in
Alberta; compare physiology, habitat, angling methods, limits and special
regulations that may apply for that species. (worksheet, template)
“Fishing for Dummies” Assignment - Create a comparison chart
for the following fishing techniques: fly fishing, trolling, shore fishing
(casting), ice fishing. Describe the gear, tackle, techniques, bait, species
commonly targeted, advantages, and drawbacks. (template)
“Take Me Fishing” Assignment - Research and design an
equipment list for one type of open water angling (spin cast, bait cast, fly
fishing, trolling) and for hard water angling (ice fishing). Include all safety
equipment and list any special considerations with each type of fishing. This
will be in the form of a list of equipment divided into gear, tackle, safety
equipment and additional equipment, and a short paragraph outlining the
precautions and special considerations which must be taken when participating
in this type of fishing.
“Fishing for Complements” Assignment - Participate in fishing
activity, whether hard and/or open water angling. Record your observations
about the event, the weather, techniques, equipment/tackle/bait used, successes/failures,
and include in your GRRRR.
